The Golden Mount Bangkok, is the only hill in Bangkok, and is of great significance for all followers of the Lord Buddha. 320 stairs take you up on the top for the best panoramic views on the Rattanakosin Island.
In 1877, King Rama V brought the Buddha relic inside custody with the Royal Chakri family through the Grand Palace towards Royal Pavilion at Wat Saket. It was then enshrined inside the from the pagoda on major of the Golden Mount.
Two decades later, Marquis Curzon, the British Viceroy of India, presented much more Buddha relics near the Nepalese border to King Rama V. These were enshrined in a bronze pagoda in 1899 and installed about the best with the Golden Mount.
The temple, Wat Saket, was built in the course of the reign of King Rama I. Each and every late October to mid-November (for 9 days close to the full moon) Wat Sakhet hosts Bangkok's most significant temple event during the Loy Kratong festival. During the event, the Golden Mount is covered with red cloth and a fair erupts around it, with food and trinket stalls, theatrical shows, freak performances, animal circuses, and other monkey business. The festival includes a candlelight procession up the Golden Mount.
